Finding Work With the Orangi Pilot Project

Akhtar Hameed Khan created the Orangi Pilot Project in 1980 to improve sanitation in Karachi's sprawling squatter settlement. Nearly three decades on OPP oversees a miniature empire of empowerment and urban planning. Helping hands are usually welcome.

David Lepeska has served as U.N. correspondent for the newswire UPI and reported for several major newspapers, including the New York Daily News and Newsday. He was chief correspondent for the Kashmir Observer in Srinagar, India, before starting his fellowship with Devex in Washington, D.C., in October 2007.
