Eyeing a career with the African Development Bank? The bank’s young professionals program might be the window you’re looking for. Applications are being accepted through March 15.

Every year AfDB launches a search for 10 young professionals to receive three years of on-the-job training in different areas of the bank’s operations. Chosen professionals will get the chance to work on at least three projects, including a field assignment. They will also undergo a series of mentoring and coaching seminars to further develop their skills.

Do well in this program and you might end up with permanent position with the bank.

But first things first: You have to meet the bank’s eligibility requirements. AfDB will only accept applicants who are below 33 years of age and citizens of its regional and non-regional member countries.

Applicants should have at least a master’s degree in economics, social sciences, international development, banking and other discipline related to its activities. Knowledge of both English and French is also required.

These are basic requirements only, though. Competition is stiff! Qualified applicants will be further assessed based on their background, work experience, academic credentials, leadership skills, and demonstration of analytical capabilities, dynamism, results-orientation and problem-solving capacities. Recruiters are looking for a commitment to Africa’s development and the ability to work in multicultural work environments.

The actual program may be as competitive as the selection process, Emanuele Santi of the 2007 YPP batch noted in a testimonial for the program: “I will not only encourage everyone to apply, but only those who are highly motivated to contribute to development, those who are willing to learn, open to change, those who can define themselves as self-starters and ready to take risks.”

If you meet all of these requirements and are ready for the program, you may apply online or by mailing a personal history form (available on the bank’s Web site) with a comprehensive curriculum vitae and a cover letter.
