EDITOR’S NOTE: Ben Rhodes, deputy national security advisor for strategic communications, tells the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition that U.S. image abroad has improved. He also cites the importance of elevating development and diplomacy to enhancing the country’s global reputation.

In an online White House chat today, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes spoke of the importance of diplomacy in the administration’s foreign policymaking. He noted the United States’ global reputation is improving and commented that “the international community is more united now.” Elevating development and diplomacy are important parts of America’s image overseas. Providing enhanced aid to countries in need around the world demonstrates the generosity and care of the American people, and that ultimately protects our national security. This is why Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stressed last week that development and diplomacy are “equal pillars” of foreign policy, alongside defense.
