A team of foreign aid workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo escaped and are currently in hiding in the forest surrounding the landing strip after gunmen fired at their private plane, an aid official said.

U.N. peacekeepers are already working to rescue the Georgian and three Americans who were on the plane, Miel Hendrickson, regional director of the U.S.-based International Medical Corps said, according to The Associated Press. Hendrickson said the peacekeepers are looking for two Congolese IMC staff present in the landing strip during the incident.

The aid workers are part of a team treating victims of rape in remote villages around the mining town of Walikale. The rapes occurred from July 30 to Aug. 1 during rebel attacks in said villages.

Hendrickson told AP that initial reports of the incident indicated that the attackers were members of one of various Mai-Mai rebel groups operating in the area.
