WIPO is the specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to developing a balanced, accessible and international intellectual property (IP) system. 

IP provides instruments to stimulate and diffuse the innovation and creativity necessary for economic development (through patents, industrial designs and copyright), and to establish order in the market by combating uncertainty, confusion and fraud (through trademarks and unfair competition law).

WIPO provides a forum for negotiating international IP treaties and standards; assists governments in using IP as part of their development strategies; provides IP training to various target groups; and delivers commercial IP services to the private sector.

WIPO Office in Japan is looking for a Writer / Researcher: 

 

Main duties:

  • Research, update, classify and edit short case studies on  the successful use of intellectual property (IP) by companies, research institutions and governments worldwide;
  • Draft new case studies (1-3 pages) based on secondary sources and primary information to be obtained through e-mail/phone interviews;
  • Find and obtain permission to use images to illustrate case studies;
  • Upload case study text, pictures and metadata into web content management system and database.

 

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, preferably in business, communications, journalism or law.
  • Excellent written and oral skills in English (native level). 
  • Basic knowledge of intellectual property concepts (patents, trademarks, copyright, etc.) is desirable.
  • Excellent internet research, fact checking and editing skills
  • Ability to grasp new ideas and subjects quickly, analyze, synthesize and write in a clear and engaging way.
  • Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word and Internet research.  Basic image editing, web editing and web content management skills would be an advantage. 
  • Some work experience related to intellectual property, business or journalism would be an advantage.
  • Valid work permit (Japan).

 

Duration: 

Full-time position (9:30am-6pm) to begin as soon as possible (April 2010 at the latest).  The term of this position is 10 months.


Remuneration:

200,000 JPY per month.  The researcher would be considered an independent contractor, not a WIPO employee or staff member.
