Personal Assistant to the Humanitarian Director

Introduction

Save the Children’s origins lies in emergency response and it has remained central to our work ever since. Our approach integrates our emergency and development work, through the medium of our country programmes, which we expect to have the expertise for both types of work. With the increasing frequency and severity of emergencies worldwide the organisation is in the process of increasing its humanitarian capacity to support programmes. To assist with this we are currently recruiting for a Personal Assistant to the Humanitarian Director. This position will be an intergral part of the department and we are looking for the successful candidate to ideally be available to commence either the end of February or early March 2012.

Job Purpose

To provide administrative support to the Humanitarian Director and Humanitarian Support team under the supervision of the Humanitarian Co-ordinator and to contribute to the efficient running of the section.



Essential Criteria

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining attention to detail
  • Demonstrative administrative and general office experience, including knowledge and experience of developing administrative systems, databases and experience of arranging overseas travel
  • Excellent computer literacy, including fast and accurate word processing, good presentation skills and use of e-mail and electronic diaries
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to deal with others tactfully and effectively over the telephone, in writing and in person
  • High level of self confidence and ability to work independently
  • Ability to provide a stable and calm influence in highly stressed situations
  • A flexible approach to work, an understanding of team working and the willingness to be an active and supportive member of the team
  • An awareness of the challenges of distance support and cultural differences, and the ability to work in a collaborative and participatory way with colleagues
  • Ability to solve problems and work under own initiative and see tasks through to completion, particularly when in a pressurised environment, ability to multi-task
  • Good writing skills, with accurate grammar and spelling
  • A good level of numeracy
  • A commitment to the aims and objectives of SC UK, including equal opportunities
