Overview

World Food Program USA is a nonprofit organization that builds support in the United States to end global hunger. WFP USA engages individuals and organizations, shapes public policy and generates resources for the United Nations World Food Program and other hunger relief operations.

The World Food Program (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide.  WFP is working to put hunger at the center of the international agenda and promoting policies, strategies and operations that directly benefit the poor and hungry.  In 2011, WFP aims to reach more than 90 million people in 73 countries. As the food assistance arm of the United Nations, WFP uses food to meet emergency needs and support economic and social development. WFP also provides the logistical support necessary to get the right food to the right people at the right time. 

Essential Functions

  • Track legislative developments on Capitol Hill and Executive Branch as they pertain to global hunger.
  • Manage Congressional outreach, including maintaining relationships with key Congressional offices to educate Members of Congress and to ensure robust USG support for comprehensive global food security programs.
  • Research, draft and update advocacy materials, including monthly policy newsletter for use in Hill outreach, fact sheets, policy briefs and budget charts.
  • Organize regular Hill briefings and assist with planning and execution of other events, including annual Award Ceremony and other relevant events.
  • Effectively coordinate with other WFP USA staff to ensure constituent responses to urgent actions are communicated back to Hill offices.
  • Take lead role in WFP USA policy responses to raise awareness of needs during emergencies and mobilize support for programs to meet those needs.
  • Represent organization at select meetings, briefings and policy forums. Lead WFP USA participation in select coalitions, as needed.
  • Additional research, outreach and administrative assignments as needed.

 Qualifications

  • Strong track record of effective advocacy work aimed at the US Congress, including organizing congressional briefings and preparing sign on letters, talking points and testimony. 
  • Knowledge of humanitarian assistance, international development and/or global hunger, with international field experience a plus.
  • Excellent writing, research and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize time, work independently, coordinate and prioritize multiple priorities, follow directions and complete tasks in an effective manner.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Master’s Degree and at least 4 years of relevant work experience.
