The United Nations has urged the international community to increase its investment in sanitation for people living in impoverished conditions. According to the organization, investing USD10 billion every year could halve the number of people living without basic toilet facilities by 2015. “An estimated 42,000 people die every week from diseases related to low water quality and an absence of adequate sanitation,” said U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who has also declared 2008 as the Year of Sanitation.
