CGD: US Global Health Initiative Needs Steady Funding, Country Ownership

Posted by Ma. Rizza Leonzon on 16 April 2010 07:43:14 AM

With a funding of USD63 billion spread over six years and strategies that target sustainable and country-led health programs, the U.S. government’s Global Health Initiative “may be the testing ground” for future reforms in the delivery of American foreign aid, according to the Center for Global Development. To effectively implement the initiative, CGD emphasized the need to identify country-specific priorities through dialogue with national governments, civil society, and other international donors and organizations, as well as ensure the steady flow of funding. The U.S. government should also be more transparent in disclosing its health financing and programs so as to prevent replicating existing health efforts in aid-recipient nations.
