Project Summary

The Rehabilitation Project for the Palm Garden in Paramaribo is funded by the Flemish Government and is located in the core zone of the World Heritage property of The Historic Inner City of Paramaribo, which was registered on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 2002. The size of the garden is ±4 hectares and contains more than 1,100 South American Royal Palms (Roystonea oleracea). Ever since the planting of the South American Royal Palms at the end of the nineteenth century, no large-scale, planned and systematic replacement has taken place and with an average age of 100 years the palms are starting to die off. Approximately 100 young South American Royal Palms need to be planted as replacement. The Rehabilitation Project involves a major maintenance and replacement scheme to restore the Palm Garden to its old glory.
