The Internet Society (ISOC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet-related standards, education, and policy. With offices in Washington D.C., USA, and Geneva, Switzerland, it is dedicated to ensuring the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of people throughout the world. The Internet Society provides leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet, serves as the organizational home for the groups responsible for Internet infrastructure standards, acts as a global clearinghouse for Internet information and education, and facilitates and coordinates Internet-related initiatives around the world focused on enabling access, building InterNetWorks, and ensuring trust and identity.

 

About the Position

 

Implementing ISOC's Enabling Access Initiative, the Department of Regional Development works to deliver on the promise of the Internet by expanding the reach and impact of the Internet in emerging economies.

Our programmes and projects include training Internet engineers on techniques that maximise technology in resource constrained environments, building communities of practice to sustain and accelerate knowledge acquisition and transfer, assisting with development and best practices for collaborative infrastructures, providing insight to policy makers and regulators on issues important to Internet access and growth, and other activities that help expand, strengthen, and evolve the Internet in less developed countries. The Department of Regional Development’s primary regional focuses are Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific.

The Programme Manager will be responsible managing activities aimed at growing ISOC’s reach, effectiveness, and impact in Internet development and coordinating programmes and projects within the Department.

 

Responsibilities

 

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the development of Departmental grant and funding proposals submitted to potential project donors, in collaboration with ISOC grants staff, and managing related grant reporting requirement in field projects.
  • Coordinating the launch of new internal and external projects, in conjunction with relevant staff.
  • Managing collaborations between ISOC, external project partners, expert volunteers, and other stakeholders on issues of access and Internet development.
  • Developing processes that track short and long-term project impacts and conducting project evaluation activities to measure and document project outcomes;
  • Tracking project budgets and forecasting expenditure variations;
  • Presenting, as required, to a variety of audiences on Internet development challenges and opportunities in emerging markets and ISOC’s role in bridging the connectivity gap.
  • Drafting and editing articles, case studies, reports, and other materials that effectively communicate programme outcomes, achievements, and impacts, in conjunction with ISOC Communications and Regional Development staff.
  • Other duties as required to advance ISOC’s effectiveness in promoting access and Internet development in emerging markets

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • 5+ years experience in international development, including experience in grant proposal development and/or management. Competence in project budget management required.
  • University degree (BA/BS) in a relevant field. Advanced degree highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in Internet development and access promotion highly desirable.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills across a wide range of written communication functions and audiences (such as proposals development, article drafting, presentations, reports, etc.) Strong and confident verbal communications skills, including skill in conducting effective outreach, project coordination meetings, and presenting.
  • Fluency in English and an additional language required.
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-cultural environments and effectiveness in managing collaborations between individuals with diverse professional backgrounds (such as technical experts, business executives, government representatives, NGO staff, among others.)

This position reports to the Director, Access and Development Initiatives. The position will be located in ISOC Reston, Virginia, USA office (preferred), or alternatively ISOC’s Geneva, Switzerland office.
