Empowering women in South and Central America

Pro Mujer and GlaxoSmithKline announced a three-year, five-country partnership. Through a US$575,000 grant, GlaxoSmithKline will help support the standardization of Pro Mujer’s health services as well as the organization’s expansion efforts in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.

Empowering women in South and Central America

Building off the support GSK has provided to the strategic development plan in Argentina, this proposal recommends a three-year plan that would support Pro Mujer’s two major initiatives:

    • Standardization of a basic and financially self-sustainable global health services model based on providing screening for chronic diseases and primary care.
    • Focusing on screening and healthcare has a strong impact in countries where Pro Mujer currently operates since chronic illnesses account for 47-75% of the disease burden and health-related loss of productivity.

The basic methodology that has been piloted in Nicaragua will be developed and implemented across all five countries. Each country may then add specific health services or products based on the geographical context and with the goal of supplementing and complementing services already available in the area.

Expansion and growth of operations across Pro Mujer with specific focus in Peru and Mexico. Peru is an attractive and increasingly mature market where Pro Mujer can leverage current efficiency to grow quickly and strengthen positioning in the market. Mexico is a large and growing market with lower penetration of financial services, where Pro Mujer will capitalize on its current infrastructure to increase productivity via the average number of clients per neighbourhood center.

Since 2012, the programme has already reached more than 277,000 women and touched the lives of more than 1.1 million families in Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.
