Global Development Alliance to Support and Encourage Diaspora Volunteerism

A public-private partnership supported by USAID and Accenture, and implemented by Cuso International, the 'Diasporas for Development Initiative' (DfD) is a Global Development Alliance to support and encourage diaspora volunteerism. This project is being implemented under the auspices of the International diaspora Engagement Alliance's (IdEA) Fellows Program. It is designed to address the challenge of human resource gaps in developing countries, often due to 'brain drain,' by engaging US-based diaspora volunteers to share their skills with Cuso's local program partners. Through the IdEA Fellows Program, IdEA will provide participants pre-departure and post-trip orientation, financial support to offset the cost of their volunteering, and the opportunity to become part of an IdEA Fellows Alumni Network. DfD is open to all US citizens or permanent residents who are members of the diaspora community and others who have a demonstrated relevant connection to, or experience in, the target country. The initiative's two pronged approach aims at developing partnerships with Diaspora Partner Organizations (DPO's) in the U.S. and recruiting US-based professionals from the diaspora to share their skills in support of projects that build employability and entrepreneurship skills in their countries of ancestry with a focus on Secure Livelihoods.
