Announced in September 2011, the Global Women's Economic Empowerment Initiative is a five-year commitment to increase sourcing from women-owned businesses, empower women through job training and education and invest $100 million in grants to women's empowerment programming. The grants will come from the Walmart Foundation and direct donations from Walmart’s international business. The company has established country-specific goals and commitments in markets where it operates including China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico. By the end of 2016, Walmart aims to source $20 billion from women-owned businesses in the U.S. and to double its sourcing globally from women-owned businesses in retail markets. In its effort to increase economic opportunities for women, Walmart will partner with CARE, Vital Voices, CountMeIn, WBENC and WeConnect International.
