Since 2008 USAID and Mercy Corps have supported small-scale farmers to compete in larger markets for fresh fruits and vegetables. In the past, they have partnered with Wal-Mart and Vibrant Villages which benefited 1,800 farmers. Wal-Mart dropped out this alliance in early 2012 to focus its efforts in Asia. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters joined to help the alliance expand to work with 500 coffee farming families to improve nutrition as well as agricultural production and business management techniques. USAID and Mercy Corps also partnered with Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung Foundation to improve livelihoods of coffee farmers. The alliance supported an additional 300 coffee-producing families to improve production, natural resource management and economic returns in their coffee systems.
