The Senekela Orange Mali Initiative is providing farmers with access to updated agricultural information: agricultural advice, product prices, stocks availability, weather forecast through a call center run by agronomists (in French and local languages). This technological innovation aims to enable farmers to save time, money and improve their productivity. A USSD service for market price information is also available. Partners of this project are the IICD (International Institute for Communication and Development), RONGEAD, and the Malian Institut d’économie locale (IER).
The project has received a GSMA m-Farmer Fund grant (a programme co-financed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and USAID). The project pilot was launched in 2013, and is now commercialised since April 2014.
While the call center has a nationwide reach, the market price information is available only for the Sikasso and Koulikoro region, but will be extended to the whole country over the next 2 years.
