In a private-public partnership, Merck and USAID/Zambia have joined forces and set up the Zambia Management and Leadership Academy (ZMLA) in June 2012. The academy will offer training in management and leadership to public health sector managers and providers. Management and leadership skills of managers and health providers are critical for efficient delivery of health services. Merck has provided $4 million to BroadReach Institute for Training and Education (BRITE) who are working with the USAID-funded Zambia Integrated Systems Strengthening Program (ZISSP) to establish the ZMLA. USAID, through ZISSP, will match the amount put forward by Merck and the program will be implemented from 2011 to 2014. So far, over 360 health care managers have been trained and a further 900 will receive training by 2014.
