Helping Internally Displaced People in Georgia with Vegetable Production

The project aims to help the Association to start up open field vegetable production in partnership with NEO, Netafim, Embassy of Israel in Georgia and the Georgian food distribution company Eco Farm. Through this activity, the association members will sell the harvested vegetables to Eco Farm to generate income to improve the livelihoods of their households.

Partnership to Boost Lettuce Production

In FY 2013,USAID's New Economic Opportunity (NEO) activity initiated a small but an innovative partnership targeting Internally Displaced People from the conflict-affected Shida Kartli region. NEO, the Embassy of Israel, and the Israeli greenhouse and drip irrigation company, Netafim, donated 45 drip irrigation systems to the USG-supported Shida Kartli Internally Displaced Peoples' Association of Vegetable Producers. The Georgian food distribution company, Eco Farm, also supplied the association with 47,000 lettuce seedlings produced by NEO-supported farmers in two municipalities. In FY 2014, this 33-member association harvested 18,000 kilograms of lettuce valued at $16,363, which Eco Farm purchased and distributed to hotels, restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets in Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital. The combined value of this partnership amounts to $10,458, where $6,972 is the contribution from private resource partners.
