Sustainable Agriculture Through Commercialization in Sri Lanka

Economic growth is the key to transforming Sri Lanka, and the private sector is the most important engine for economic growth. USAID, in collaboration with the private sector, is working to create new jobs and jump-start much-needed economic growth. In partnership with Hayleys Agro Farms, a Sri Lankan agricultural company, USAID is helping to improve horticultural production and create new markets for local farmers. This partnership, called the Sustainable Agriculture through Commercialization program, will work with an estimated 3,600 farmers over three years in Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala districts. The program will also create new jobs in a processing center in Batticaloa District. USAID’s commitment of $1 million over two years leveraged $2.86 million from Hayleys, demonstrating the importance of private sector engagement.
