Women and Girls Lead Global (WGLG) is a public-private alliance created between USAID, Independent Television Service (ITVS) and the Ford Foundation, and CARE. WGLG is a three-year partnership that aims to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide by creating a ten-episode documentary film series about women and girls rising above dire circumstances to seek better lives for themselves, their families and communities. In addition, WGLG will disseminate the films and incorporate them into existing development work in health, education, gender-based violence, economic opportunity, and leadership. Through locally led campaigns, WGLG raises awareness and mobilize action around issues such as child marriage, teen pregnancy and gender-based violence.
The WGLG partnership is currently active in Bangladesh, Colombia, El Salvador, India, Jordan, Kenya, Malawi and Peru. By combining the power of media with locally led social change campaigns, the partnership is engaging schools and communities to raise awareness and action. WGLG will help improve the lives of women and girls in developing countries by using media to create greater agreement with the concept that males and females should have equal access to social, economic and political opportunities.
