Worldwide Support for Family Planning

Make high-quality, modern hormonal contraceptives available and accessible to women in low-resource areas.

Worldwide Support for Family Planning

In 2009 Bayer launched the Contraceptive Security Initiative (CSI) jointly with USAID and introduced an oral contraceptive, Microgynon™ Fe, into the African market at a reduced price. The CSI aims to complement subsidized aid programs by making this oral contraceptive available mainly to middle-class couples. The supply price is adjusted in such a way that pharmacies can offer the product at a price that matches the financial resources of middle-income women and couples. By covering its costs, Bayer will be able to provide a continuous supply beyond the five-year term of the agreement. As local wholesalers and pharmacists benefit from sales, CSI has the effect of generating national income and thus further reducing dependence on charitable support. Since December 2010, the initiative has been successively introduced in Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya and Malawi; four more countries are scheduled to join the program.

Apart from access to modern contraceptives, self-determined family planning also requires knowledge. Sex education is therefore an essential cornerstone for improving people’s future opportunities.

By fostering awareness through the World Contraception Day on September 26th every year, and by supporting sex education programs, Bayer helps distribute health information and services where they are most needed.

Together with the DSW, Bayer has launched an innovative education program in Uganda and Kenya. The program – called "Improving the Sexual and Reproductive Health of Young Adolescents " (YAP project) – targets teenagers aged between 10 and 14. Comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education in schools and communities teaches the students how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS infection. An important component of the project is involving the teenagers’ social environment to ensure a sustainable improvement in their living situation.

Training programs for family planning providers are also part of Bayer’s commitment. Bayer supports programs like the Centro Latinoamericano Salud y Mujer project (CELSAM), providing detailed information on sex education in all Latin American countries by radio, educational programs for schools and universities, telephone hotlines and information booths on the streets. In Asia, Bayer cooperates with the Asia Pacific Council on Contraception (APCOG).
