Job Description


The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is seeking a Summer 2019 intern for its Middle East and North Africa Division. Interns for ABA ROLI will work with program staff of their assigned division to gain an understanding of international development programs and international rule of law issues.

Although this is an unpaid position, interns at ABA ROLI are eligible for a wide variety of perks and learning opportunities including:

  • Transportation reimbursement up to $15.00/day
  • Field trips to D.C. legal destinations such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Supreme Court, and Library of Congress
  • Brown-bag lunches with ABA ROLI staff and guest speakers


Typical responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform research on substantive rule of law and governance issues relating to the MENA region, including, but not limited to, judicial reform, legal education, women and girl’s empowerment, combatting violent extremism, community participation and social cohesion, anti-corruption, and transnational crimes.

  • Contribute to proposal design by performing research on relevant topics, preparing capacity statements, and drafting theories of change and developing indicators to measure impact.

  • Support the collection and organization of historical data across MENA programs.

  • Monitor and report on legal, economic, and security developments in the MENA region

  • Produce outreach materials.

  • Attend relevant events in the DC area and provide read-outs and analysis to senior staff.

  • Work with program and in-country staff with day-to-day support tasks.


  • JD candidate or MA (completed or in progress) seeking relevant degree in international affairs, international development, or related subject areas, or recent JD or MA graduate

  • Strong commitment to public interest law and/or international development, as evidenced by relevant experience and coursework.

  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Proficiency with MS Office and Outlook.

  • Proactive work style.

  • International development experience highly desirable but not required.

  • Knowledge of Arabic is a plus.
