Role
Palladium International and the Australia-Vanuatu Policing and Justice Program - Stretem Rod Blong Jastis Mo Sefti - are seeking a Full-Time Adviser to the Public Solicitor’s Office (an office with a function akin to Australia’s Legal Aid offices), based in Port Vila to work with the VAPJP team. This is an exciting and challenging role. The role will involve provincial travel but not for protracted periods of time.

Objectives
- To assist the Vanuatu Public Solicitor’s Office (PSO) to continue to improve service delivery while facilitating capacity development Activities within the PSO through mentoring and demonstration of legal mentoring techniques, coaching conversations, legal advocacy techniques, case preparation, case management and effective conduct of litigation.
- In addition to advisory support to the PSO, the adviser will support the provision of general legal strengthening support across the sector

Key Responsibilities
- Build productive working relationships with the Public Solicitor and all other staff within the PSO
- Support and assist the Public Solicitor on office and staff management, including executive mentoring, with a particular focus on institutionalizing or embedding internal procedures and processes including legal supervision and mentoring among the legal staff that is not wholly reliant on the adviser and the Public Solicitor, management of conflict matters, administrative processes, HRM processes, file management, file closure and the continual renewal of the PSO Handbook.
- Support the establishment and embedding of internal practice improvement and capacity development for lawyers that is not dependent on organization and delivery by the adviser including by supporting the weekly lawyer meetings to discuss difficult cases, providing in-house training to the staff of the PSO and preparing associated training materials that can be used by other staff members within the PSO to deliver training.
- Appear in cases on an exceptional basis when requested by the Public Solicitor with their approval and the approval of the Program Coordinator (Justice) and DFAT.
- Assist in and support the provision of advice by the Public Solicitor.

Specific Competencies
- A passion for new challenges, different cultures and mentoring/supporting the growth of your colleagues
- Law Degree and admission to practice in a relevant jurisdiction
- Criminal law experience particularly with respect to sexual offences, homicide and drug offences
- Experience in case management and the mentoring and supervision of other legal officers
- At least five years of experience in management and delivery of legal aid or other legal work relevant to the work of the PSO
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with people at all levels of an organisation, maximising cooperation and contributing in team environments to achieve collective goals
- Demonstrated ability to undertake capacity development including mentoring, coaching and facilitation of skills transfer while considering cultural and gender issues
