The Nutrition Advisor is a critical member of the Nutrition team in the Department of Global Health (DGH) who will provide institutional, technical and strategic guidance and support to Save the Children’s (SC) global work in nutrition. The Nutrition Advisor will be the technical lead to design state-of-the-art nutrition programs and provide technical assistance to country offices to help assess needs and opportunities, and design and support the implementation of high quality and effective nutrition programs in selected high priority countries. The Advisor will also represent Save the Children US (SCUS) in the broader international nutrition community, assist and support other SCUS teams, as appropriate, and collaborate with Save the Children International (SCI) in defining and advancing SCI’s global nutrition agenda. The Advisor will oversee bilateral projects in Laos, Niger and other countries as assigned. The Advisor will supervise two SCUS staff based in the field.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
Technical Leadership and Support (40%)
• Provide senior level technical expertise and oversight to ensure programs apply evidence-based nutrition interventions and approaches in our programs, and develop and support new state-of-the-art approaches.
• Provide technical assistance to country and global nutrition projects.
• Work with SCI country offices to build their nutrition programming capacity, including approaches to integrating nutrition into other health programming, and especially into Livelihoods, HIV and Early Childhood Development work as needed.
• Provide leadership, training and technical support for workshops, and collaborate in developing training modules and other tools, as needed.
• Provide technical support to develop Nourishing the Youngest Common Approach, which is a standardized method to nutrition programming across SC.
• In coordination with the Nutrition Team Lead, represent DGH on nutrition-related matters with other offices within SC and externally on specific technical topics with donors, academic institutions, and technical assistance organizations.
Mobilizing Public and Private Resources (30%)
• Play a leadership role with SCUS and SCI country offices in identification, development and submission of quality proposals in nutrition, health and food security.
• Collaborate and develop long-term funding strategies for SC’s technical and programming priorities in nutrition.
• Establish and maintain new/existing relationships with key donors (headquarters and regional/country level) and program partners to advance global nutrition sector work.
Program Management (10%)
• Oversee USAID funded projects in Laos, Niger and other countries as assigned.
• Ensure high quality program management through regular monitoring and oversight of program activities; represent project to both internal and external audiences.
• Oversee and coordinate project activities with country project teams and SCI offices.
• Contribute to key donor deliverables including management plans, annual work plans, donor reports, results trackers and ad hoc requests for USAID and other donor funded projects.
• Supervise a Chief of Party and a Senior Nutrition Specialist, who are both based in the field.
Program Learning and Innovation (10%)
• Articulate key nutrition program innovation and learning priorities, especially related to key gaps in the evidence base for programming, and the steps needed to inform policy, and translate policy into practice at scale.
• Identify best practices from country programs and global work, document these practices, and disseminate and promote uptake within and outside SC.
• Share SC best practices externally and introduce new evidence-based best practices into SC global and country level work.
• Support monitoring and evaluation, with a focus on sound data collection, analysis, and interpretation for program management, proposal development, and documentation of project innovations and impact. Support high quality baseline, midterm and final evaluations and other program planning assessments.
• Initiate planning and implementation of skills development/training/capacity building for SC’s nutrition technical staff including development and review of training materials.
• Collaborate with SCI and other SC members on technical matters.
Technical Leadership for Policy and Advocacy (10%)
• Help define SC’s global advocacy agenda to address key agency priorities around nutrition.
• Contribute to building alliances and strategic partnerships to influence policy and support learning and innovation.
• Provide nutrition expertise to implementation of larger agency advocacy efforts.
• Provide guidance for country-level advocacy efforts.
• Provide technical expertise to policy and advocacy related efforts with a nutrition focus on global campaigns.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in international nutrition programming, with emphasis on maternal and child nutrition, including experience working in developing countries
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required
- Proven track record in developing effective and responsive project proposals
- Previous experience with USAID and other global donors
- Strong record of fostering new and effective partnerships within the US and with international partners
- MSC’s degree in nutrition, MPH, or PhD preferred
• Food security and multisector programming knowledge and experience highly desirable
