Job Description

The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) needs your expertise to ensure better market access for vegetable farmers. Established in 1971, the Center is one of 17 non-profit agricultural research centres financed by the German Government and an international community of donors. It is the only research institute to conserve vegetable biodiversity in a genebank and to contribute to food security and the fight against malnutrition and poverty through research and the promotion of vegetable breeding. Its primary objective is to promote the breeding and regional marketing of traditional vegetable varieties by developing and disseminating improved, more affordable methods of commercial cultivation and post-harvest handling. It also focuses on increasing the number of young people working in the field of vegetable breeding. This approach is designed to improve both the quantity and quality of fresh vegetables available to consumers and to allow smallholder farmers and cooperatives to generate more income.

Your tasks will involve:
  • Supporting farmers associations with the aim of leveraging market information more efficiently in order to procure inputs and services and jointly market vegetable products
  • Establishing and developing ‘vegetable business hubs’ to link vegetable farmers, especially youth to inputs, finance and markets
  • Supporting research activities aimed at improving vegetable value chains in eastern and southern Africa
  • Supporting the preparation of project proposals and training measures
Your profile:
  • A degree in agronomy or economics, with a focus on agribusiness, marketing or agricultural finance
  • Extensive experience in the areas of smallholder production systems and value chains, ideally in an African context
  • Experience in working with agricultural associations and/or cooperative structures
  • Experience in marketing fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Fluent business English
  • In addition you have the citizenship of an EU member state, UK passport holders are eligible to apply
