Job Description

100 Resilient Cities is looking for an Associate Director to work with the Vice President of Resilience Finance to develop the strategy and operations for the newly created Resilience Finance Team based in New York City. The Resilience Finance Team is currently focused on five core functions: (i) providing 100RC member cities with finance-related transaction support and development, (ii) financial sector related partnership management and solution development, (iii) delivering on a financial market influence strategy, (iv) 100RC revenue generation from finance related activities, and (v) knowledge management and dissemination for financial solutions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

City Support + Transaction Development

  • Liase with the City and Practice Management team to provide financial structuring support to selected 100RC member cities and the 100RC team on the development of a pipeline of quality, investable initiatives from the 100RC member network that can be shared with external funders
  • Help match and broker partnerships between cities with projects and financial institutions
  • Leverage technical knowledge and strong negotiation skills to develop solutions and overcome impasses in transaction development
  • Serve as a trusted resource to member cities on budget and project prioritization, identifying and understanding potential transactions funding streams
  • Build capacity within our cities and 100RC to develop investment-ready resilience projects
  • Develop a replicable and resilience value capture approach that supports investment in urban resilience that can be broadly adopted by funding and financial institutions, and accelerates financial participation in urban resilience projects with an eye towards revenue generation and sustainability for 100RC

Partnership Management and Solution Development

  • Identify and develop relationships with the key partners who can help support the financial project development needs of member cities
  • Develop financial solutions where market solutions do not exist
  • Build and manage a portfolio of finance related partnerships that provide pro-bono finance-related solutions and funding opportunities to the 100RC member network
  • Prepare documentation for 100RC’s internal approval processes including, partnership due diligence evaluations, MOUs with partners, summary notes

Organizational and Team Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Resilience Finance to develop the team strategy and structure
  • Manage, gather, and disseminate lessons of experience with 100RC cities to facilitate solution scaling and knowledge sharing
  • Participate in targeted conferences and events to develop partnerships, share potential projects and advance the adoption of resilience within the financial community
  • Contribute to the vision of developing the Resilience Finance practice with an eye on sustainability
  • Mentor and support junior 100RC staff, and help build talent base

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • 10-12 years of work experience in the financial sector
  • MBA or CFA certification, or commensurate work experience
  • Extensive experience in impact investing, project finance or real estate finance and in successfully closing transactions
  • Thorough understanding of regional banking, financial institutions, operating environment, with related industry knowledge and relationships
  • Strong financial and credit skills, having structured, negotiated and closed and/or provided advisory support for project finance related transactions, ideally with or on behalf of a municipality
  • Experience with a variety of financial instruments (debt and equity) and municipal credit structures, including knowledge of city budgeting and finance
  • Strong skills in the evaluation of risk and ability to anticipate short and long-term implications of decisions
  • Ability to interact directly and independently with senior city officials, financial and technical partners
  • Knowledgeable in international development - skilled collaborator who can work successfully across boundaries and multiple cultures, with the ability to bring different ideas together
  • Excellent business judgment, strong analytical and problem solving skills, with capacity to deal with conflicting priorities to identify issues and present creative, practical solutions and deliver high quality work on schedule
  • Entrepreneurial thinker that thrives in a dynamic work environment, and is able to create structure out of ambiguity
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills in English are required
  • Must be authorized to work in the UK or USA
