GAIN fights malnutrition in Ethiopia through innovative and sustainable models that increase access to affordable nutritious foods among communities vulnerable to malnutrition.
GAIN’s Mother, Infant, Young Child nutrition (MIYCN) Initiative in Ethiopia has invested in two projects to address the high levels of stunting among infant and young children:
1) Facilitate the introduction of nutritious complementary foods (CF) at national scale - GAIN will lead exploratory research in the development of delivery channels and CF product promotion by working with viable and sustainable businesses. Further, GAIN facilitates the expansion of the community-based local production of complementary foods throgh small-scale facilities. GAIN’s contribution to the multi-stakeholder community-based complementary food production is to develop and test a viable business model that will work in semi-urban areas of Ethiopia and explore effective delivery channels and marking strategy to roll out at national scale.
2) Facilitate the introduction of Micronutrient Powders (MNPs) through filling the knowledge gap around operational aspects of scaling-up MNP promotion and distribution in Ethiopia as part of a process to establish a national home fortification program.
The Associate will provide support to the Project Manager MIYCN Program and to the Ethiopia Country Manager in implementing GAIN’s country level strategy for the MIYCN portfolio. The Associate will work closely with partners and other civil society organizations to achieve impact through scalable models of complementary food production.
This includes working with social marketing organizations, government and the private sector to identify effective delivery channels and viable business models that are feasible in the Ethiopian context, driving impact though regular supervision and monitoring of the project, accelerating growth in coverage through improved products, and develop innovative demand creation strategies and community level behavior change for optimal mother, infant and young children feeding. The Associate will support the Projet Manager MIYCN Program in implementing the work plan of MIYCN projects, in particular the Complementary Food (CF) project and the Micronutrient Powder (MNP) project.
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is driven by the vision of a world without malnutrition. GAIN is a Swiss based foundation that mobilizes public-private partnerships and provides financial and technical support to deliver nutritious foods to those people most at risk of malnutrition. The organization is delivering improved nutrition to an estimated 700 million people in more than 35 countries, half of whom are women and children. Nutrition products are as varied as fortified cooking oil and flour in Africa, soy sauce in China and biscuits in India, as well as specialized products for infant and young child nutrition, and interventions to protect the most vulnerable affected by emergencies or chronic illness.
