Job Description

NCBA CLUSA is currently seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Biodiversity Specialist for a USAID-funded global development alliance (GDA) project in Madagascar. The project will focus on improving biodiversity, sustainable landscapes and livelihoods through the vanilla value chain. The Biodiversity Specialist should have significant management, training, and field implementation experience; experience managing private-sector partnerships and working with cooperatives; a commitment to real capacity-building; and experience successfully implementing integrated value chain and environmental interventions. The expected duration of the project is 3 years and the position will be based in Doany, Andapa District.

ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Design and execute integrated activities to promote improved biodiversity and sustainable vanilla production
  • Lead biodiversity focused activities such as developing tree nurseries, agroforestry, reforestation, protected area monitoring and management, and sustainability certification compliance
  • Support farmers in reducing threats to biodiversity
  • Facilitate good, regular communication with private sector partners, project staff, and with partner cooperatives
  • Ensure the effective use and coordination of USAID resources and the compliance of the financial systems and controls with USAID standards.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, forestry, or other related field is required.
  • 6+ years of experience in implementing USAID or other donor-funded projects in biodiversity conservation activities in Madagascar
  • Experience working with farmers organizations, preferably with cooperatives
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written), analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills
  • Experience in private sector approaches to development and managing private sector partnerships
  • Demonstrated ability in the concepts, principles, methods and evidence-based research relating to the design and implementation of integrated environmental/agricultural interventions.
  • Experience working in the vanilla value chain preferred
  • Proven ability to produce results in challenging contexts
  • Fluency in French and Malagasy is required
  • Ability to travel to and work in remote project locations in challenging conditions
