Job Description

Chemonics seeks a Writer/Editor Director for the Global Health Supply Chain Office (GHSCO). The Director will set standards for highest quality editing and writing, customer service, and teamwork; and establish, maintain, and promote quality standards for all written materials in the GHSCO including writing, editing, style, format, design, and production. The Director will train GHSCO staff in writing and best practices in proposal development and project reporting. S/he will serve as a technical writer, editor, or communications specialist for projects, proposals, practices, or other office and corporate initiatives in addition to writing and editing a wide range of technical materials. The Writer/Editor Director will oversee the team of manager-level writer/editors and work under the supervision of the Internal Communications Director.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Establishes, maintains, and promotes quality standards for all written materials in the GHSC Office, including technical materials which are compliant with client and corporate standards for writing, design, style, and format throughout the project life cycle.
  • Mentors and trains staff to use Chemonics tools, standards, and other quality assurance tools.
  • Helps enforce and promote understanding of corporate practices for billing project communication services.
  • Recommends strategies to streamline systems for effectiveness and efficiency, considering client needs, team dynamics, and office and corporate mission.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with divisions within the GHSC Office and other clients and continually promotes outstanding client service with home-office staff and field teams.
  • Works collaboratively with project teams to meet project communications needs and ensures they are consistent with corporate standards and client needs.
  • Helps projects identify appropriate resources to carry out project communication tasks.
  • Stays current with GHSC Office projects to initiate and promote activities that highlight best practices and impact.
  • Conceptualizes, articulates, and leads technical assignments, as needed.
  • Develops presentations and trains staff through one-on-one mentoring, small group coaching, corporate training programs, and information dissemination.
  • Advances body of knowledge and quality standards in communications. Formulates interdisciplinary approaches and advises internal and external clients on technical trends and priorities.
  • Participates in activities to build a strong knowledge culture by sharing best practices and important innovations through practices and knowledge management systems.
  • Undertakes assignments on projects or special initiatives as appropriate.
  • Applies technical knowledge of global health and supply chain to improve proposals, project deliverables, and other corporate materials.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with new business staff to understand and respond to clients’ needs, continually promoting outstanding client service.
  • Conceptualizes and develops tools, guidelines, and training materials consistent with corporate policies and best practices for new business efforts.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required

Qualifications:
  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience, of which 6 years are professional editing experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of supervisory/management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of USAID’s Global Health Bureau and its operations preferred.
  • Ability to solve complex technical, managerial, or operational problems and evaluate options based on relevant information, resources, experience, and knowledge.
  • Experience living or working in developing countries preferred.
  • Willingness to work overseas for up to 4-8 weeks per year and to consider long-term overseas assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, and lead presentations, training courses, and effective meetings.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise department staff, multiple project teams, and other initiatives.
  • Demonstrated integrity, independent thinking, judgment, and respect for others.
  • Foreign language fluency preferred.
