Campaign Lead

We seek an experienced campaigner to lead a global effort to phase out mercury-based lighting, reducing toxicity to people and the planet, and enacting a global transition to LED lighting. This is an 11-month contract culminating in November 2021, with potential for a short extension after that.

The candidate should have subject matter expertise in the harmful effects of mercury and be familiar with the zero mercury community of practice as well as the Minamata Conference of Parties. Additionally, the candidate will have experience leading global campaigns pertaining to public health, environmental justice, and/or climate change mitigation.

The candidate will report to and work closely with the Chief of Communications & Development, who oversees communications, fundraising, donor management, organizational outreach, and high-level support for thought leadership on behalf of a highly matrixed organization with offices, projects, and programs around the world. The candidate will oversee the work of an international team focused on government engagement; communications and advocacy; technical evidence; and engaging the private sector.

Key Responsibilities

The Campaign Lead will provide strategic oversight and guidance, as well as day to day management for a global campaign and team. Examples of key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

· Work with the campaign team to develop and finalize the campaign strategy

· Develop and execute on a plan across many countries/regions, leveraging commonalities and identifying and addressing differences

· Provide oversight and/or manage local and remote campaign staff and contractors

· Manage the campaign budget

· Partner with workstream leads to ensure coordination of information, strategy and outreach across the campaign Identify and guide the enactment of creative ways to influence a region, country, or stakeholder / group toward the campaign goal

· Engage collaboratively with senior government representatives and other high level experts, and assist with the formation of national positions

· Fine-tune campaign strategy on an ongoing basis in consultation with staff and experts

· Manage a tight schedule, with increasing intensity in Quarters 3 and 4 of 2021.

· Attend a series of meetings in September 2021.

· Be flexible and willing to correct course in pursuit of better outcomes

The Ideal Candidate

· 7-10 years of experience; at least 5 years leading and/or working in global campaigns

· Track record of success in a global campaign

· International experience required, experience in international multilateral negotiations preferred

· Bachelor’s or master’s degree (relevant field preferred)

· Fluency in more than one language preferred

· Exemplary project management and team coordination skills; knows how to work through people to get results

· Moves smoothly between analyzing an evidence base and formulating high-level strategy

· Persuasive; ability to connect with and influence people in diverse, international work environments and settings, including business, government and the non-profit sector

· Ability to travel in both developed and developing countries once COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed

· Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

· Intellectual agility

Compensation and Location

This is a full-time, 11-month contract position starting in February 2021 and can be based anywhere. Compensation will range between $94,000-$150,000 based on the candidate’s level of experience and expertise. We pay all contractors according to international benchmarks. International travel will be required, once COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed, as well as evening or weekend hours.
