Job Description

Position Summary

The Intern will support advocacy campaigns and research promotion related to Freedom House’s global publications and programmatic work. He/she will support the Communications and Publications teams by creating graphics to support and enhance Freedom House’s social media presence. The Intern will assist with graphic design and website management. He/she should have a passion for Freedom House’s mission and be able to design within an established brand identity while proposing new and innovative ideas.

This position reports to Senior Web and Social Media Editor and requires a commitment of about 25 hours per week.

This is a temporary paid internship for currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate students that will last for about 12 weeks, depending on the student’s availability.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in international human rights and/or international relations
  • Experience with creating basic graphics and editing photos in Adobe Photoshop
  • Ability to follow design templates and a visual identity guide
  • Ability to think creatively and have an eye for innovative graphic opportunities
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate with others, and work as an effective team member
  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work and multi task to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator
  • Ability to follow design templates and a visual identity guide
  • Ability to think creatively and have an eye for innovative graphic opportunities
  • Experience with social media promotion using Twitter, Hootsuite, Facebook
  • Experience with, or an interest in data visualization
  • Experience with, or an interest in using tools like Piktochart and Infogram
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and content management systems like Wordpress and Drupal
  • Familiarity with any type of plug-and-play design apps such as Canva or Adobe Spark

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in creating branded graphics for a range of Freedom House communications campaigns including: infographics, social media graphics, website graphics, and gifs.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Web and Social Media Editor to produce brand-relevant designs
  • Coordinate with the Publications’ teams in creating design materials related to report releases and current events related to Freedom House’s work.
  • Assist with updating and maintain Freedom House’s blog.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for day-to-day functioning of the Communications Team
  • Other related duties as assigned
