Job Description

ENVIRONMENTAL INCENTIVES

Environmental Incentives (EI) is seeking a Communications Specialist Consultant to support the USAID-funded Economics of Natural Capital in East Africa Program (NatCap). NatCap is supporting the USAID Kenya and East Africa Regional Mission to perform analytical studies and policy advocacy on the economic valuation of natural capital for East Africa’s transboundary wildlife and wildlife habitats. The goal of this effort is to strengthen regional dialogue, learning and decision making related to the management of natural resources for improved biodiversity conservation across the East African Region. This is a part-time (20-30 hours per week), temporary contract position through March 2022.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The ideal candidate will adeptly take on a variety of tasks to support EI’s work with USAID in the development and delivery of key communications through a variety of channels, both traditional and modern, and in outreach and stakeholder engagement. The ideal candidate will have exceptional writing and copy-editing skills, experience successfully meeting USAID branding and marking expectations, the ability to distill complex material into tailored communications products, an eye for design, the ability to work in teams, experience with science or conservation-focused communication, and a problem-solving orientation. The responsibilities for this consultancy include:

  • Support day-to-day communications and outreach activities;
  • Support production of targeted stakeholder engagement communications products (reports, fact sheets, op-eds, social media campaigns, radio, and television spots);
  • Foster collaboration with NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), community-based organizations, private sector, and government to achieve conservation goals;
  • Work with the technical and stakeholder engagement team to coordinate work, clarify messages and fine-tune the shared communication plan;
  • Manage communications contractors, including designers, photographers, videographers, writers, and translators.
QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

These qualifications are considered the minimum necessary and we expect successful candidates will bring more than the minimum listed:

  • Citizenship of an East African Community country (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda)
  • Ability to work remotely as part of an integrated multi-national team
  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, environmental studies, or a related field
  • At least three years of professional experience in communications
  • Experience working with USAID, ideally in developing communications materials in line with USAID Branding and Marking (ADS 320)
  • Fluent in English
  • Highly organized with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong copy editing and English writing skills
  • Ability to write, edit, and distill technical content into compelling advocacy materials
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office suite (particularly MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Adobe Creative Suite experience
  • Knowledge of at least one other major East African language (e.g., French, Kiswahili, Kinyarwanda, etc.)
  • Familiarity with biodiversity conservation programs in East Africa
  • Familiarity with the importance and use of Natural Capital Valuation in policy and management decisions
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS AND BASE STATION

Position is remote but the candidate’s home-base must be within the East African Community. No travel requirements at this time.

COMPENSATION

Hourly rate commensurate with experience
