Job Description

The Communications Specialist will work under the supervision of the Chief of Party to produce a variety of products and publications. Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Produce and submit communication products and publications, support event management and interactive engagement opportunities that support USAID Ethiopia’s strategic plan.
  • Support event management and other interactive engagements.
  • Manage social media and other online accounts.
  • Write and edit project summaries and outreach materials including fact sheets, infographics, and other communication tools.
  • Improve the quality of internal and external documents and reports.
  • Prepare and oversee project information for publication and dissemination.
  • Collect content through interaction with implementing partners and site visits.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, International Development, Public Health, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred;
  • Task-oriented communications strategist with 5-7 years of communication-related experience.
  • Experience with US Government agencies or other international donors, including a strong knowledge of communications and social media strategies for USAID-funded projects, desirable
  • Familiarity with public health and international development;
  • Must be capable of crafting informative messages tailored accordingly to a variety of media (press releases, websites, video, social media, etc.), targeting diverse audiences;
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, practices, and techniques of communication, and have skills in applying such knowledge to develop written information materials for dissemination through a variety of media.
  • This includes an understanding of the use of written communication in developing news releases, feature stories, background statements, fact sheets, media spots, and scripts that effectively transmit information about complex USAID programs/projects/activities and functions.
  • A working knowledge of media relations, publishing, and event planning;
  • Proven ability to write strategic development policy documents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work effectively with HQ program staff.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, oral and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English required.

The project is aimed to support the Government of Ethiopia (GOE) to improve the quality of health service and create a sustainable health care system through use of data for decision making and for providing similar services and deliverables to other countries in Africa or to respond to a crisis in Ethiopia.
