Human Rights Watch is seeking a highly motivated and qualified person to provide operational and administrative assistance and support to the Director of Security. The Security Program enables the organization to be responsive and proactive in dealing with the security threats faced by HRW, its staff and our partners. With the Information Security Program, we provide security and risk management support and guidance across a wide and diverse range of areas including crisis and incident response, asset protection, programmatic work, travel safety and event security.
This position is a new role and in addition to providing key administrative support, you will have the opportunity to build operational experience across the full range of security functions delivered to the organization. For the right candidate there will be significant potential to develop knowledge, skills and experience in the field of security risk management within the sector.
Initially a 1 year position, there is the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding. Part-time working hours would also be considered. The position will be based in HRW’s London Office, and will report to the Director of Security.

Support Team Operations
- Organize and document security support operations and procedures (i.e., pre- departure briefings, security risk assessments, asset registers); ensure these procedures are being followed by staff; and identify possible ways to improve efficiency and efficacy.
- Support monitoring and evaluation, including tracking, collating, and analyzing data on security incidents, research missions, and other ongoing security projects.
- Contribute and coordinate updates, and review of HRW physical security guidance, knowledge materials, playbooks.
- Support the Directors of Security and Information Security in fulfilling their roles in the context of crisis and incident management;
- Serve as key point of contact and coordinator for logistics between security and HRW offices, global staff, and external partners.
- Lead on requirements and requests for procurement and management of equipment and security assets. including sat-phones, medical kits, protective equipment and other security equipment that are provided to staff on a temporary or permanent basis.
- Oversee vendor relationships with service providers. Identify opportunities for improvement of service delivery.
- Coordinate security training programs and support security team colleagues in the delivery of safety/security training worldwide; offering advisory support on systems, process and best practice.
- Assist with preparing, drafting, editing, formatting and/or distributing materials such as security guidance, policies & procedures, alerts, announcements, reports on security activities.
- Provide administrative support to the Director of Security including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, tracking and processing security expenses and invoicing, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, and responding to requests for information.
- In collaboration with Director of Security, monitor the security situation in locations of significance to HRW and communicate relevant information to stakeholders.
- Work together with Directors of Security and wider security team to further innovate, transform and inspire safety and security within the organization.
- Lead with implementation of office security processes and plans.
- Prepare travel safety briefings as required.
- Other projects agreed with the Director of Security
- Identify opportunities to ensure continual development of professional safety/security skills, knowledge and experience
- Conduct occasional travel to HRW offices and/or field locations in support of security team activities/aims.
- Carry out other duties as required
Education: A level of education that when combined with your professional experience will adequately show you have the capability to contribute meaningfully to HRW’s security function. Candidates who have relevant academic degrees or security certifications are encouraged to apply, but this is a plus - not a requirement.
Experience: A minimum of two year of relevant work experience is required.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
- Prior office/administrative experience preferred.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to distil security information content for internal and external consumption is required. Proficiency in another language is desirable.
- Strong interest in security risk management; experience working with non-governmental or media organizations is desirable.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks are required.
- Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
- Strong proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required
