Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development and Communications based in Washington, DC, the Development and Communications Associate will help the team drive a strategic vision for integrated communications and development activities. It is an exciting opportunity to drive a joint expansion of public relations and the creation of the organization’s first unrestricted revenue plan, which aims to raise $5 million annually. The position will join a growing team based in Washington, DC and London, United Kingdom.

The right candidate will have a genuine passion for creating best-in-class digital content and creative campaigns to drive unrestricted donations to Relief International. They will also have excellent customer service skills in order to further Relief International’s private fundraising goals and donor outreach. They will help the team respond quickly and effectively to daily and long-term projects acting in a support role. Take a lead role in the administrative tasks of the Development and Communications Department.

The Associate will take occasional trips to the field as needed to collect programmatic updates, and conduct staff and beneficiary interviews with an eye toward delivering fresh and compelling content for Relief International’s website, Annual Reports, and other marketing materials.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Communications: Drafts engaging content for RI’s website that align with the Communications Department’s editorial calendar and strategic fundraising goals.
  • Social Media: Works closely with Development & Communications Officer to create digital and written materials for Relief International’s Social Media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram). Responsible for monitoring and analyzing current events and news hooks related to Relief International’s work. Also responsible for ensuring consistent and accurate messages.
  • Donation Administration: Responsible for recording donors and prospects’ contact information, contribution amounts, and dates in order to send tax receipts, correspondence and acknowledgement letters for gifts. Communicates with private donors and high net worth individuals to deliver proposals, donor tier benefits, coordinate event RSVPs, and send contribution receipts under the guidance of Development & Communications Officer. Pulls data on the department’s fundraising efforts to produce reports for the Board, its committees, Finance and other interested parties on RI’s CRM Blue State Digital.
  • Email Marketing: Assists the Development & Communication Officer in drafting concise and compelling messages and campaigns to further Relief International’s digital fundraising efforts. Works with global and field level staff to identify engaging stories and programs to highlight in solicitations and monthly emails to prospective donors.
  • Communications Focal Points: Responds to requests and inquiries from Relief International’s team of nearly 20 Communications Focal Points (CFPs) based in each of our 16 country offices. Helps conduct orientations, trainings, and CFP meetings to communicate departmental goals to field teams.
  • Development Research: Directs the work of RI interns to research potential donors and their ability to fund Relief International’s work in fragile settings. Works closely with the Senior Director, Development & Communications to help create tailored donor proposals, arrange the logistics of private donor trips, and other requests as they arise.
  • Digital Support: Designs graphics and other creative assets for online and printed marketing materials to be used across the organization to reinforce Relief International’s brand identity, including but not limited to one pagers, reports, branded collateral, etc. Works closely with the Development & Communications Officer to manage the day-to-day use and back end of RI’s new WordPress site
  • Events Management: Helps to organize Relief International’s events series to drive fundraising among high net worth individuals through private dinners, receptions, conference calls and RI’s signature Breakfast Briefing series. Responsible for sending and tracking event invitations and responses, creating designed invitations and collateral, arranging catering, coordinating remarks, and preparing marketing materials for use at events.
  • Finance: Works with the Finance team to identify and earmark restricted donations. Responsible for reconciling donations brought in by the Communications & Development department on a regular basis for audit purposes.
  • Administration: Responsible for reporting, routine correspondence, expense tracking, and other administrative duties on behalf of the department.
  • Travel: Will take occasional trips to the field as needed to collect programmatic updates, staff and beneficiary interviews with an eye toward delivering fresh and compelling content.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

This position will require a demonstrated ability to achieve results in a demanding and fast paced environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or Bachelor’s degree with commensurate work experience;
  • Minimum of one internship (3 months) in related field, preferably at an international organization;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work independently in a face-paced environment;
  • Professional demeanor and customer service orientation toward donors;
  • Social media knowledge and understanding on how to optimize communications;
  • Well-developed research skills ;
  • Ability to execute a project from start to finish independently and on time;
  • Proficiency in content software such as Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Proficiency in Blue State Digital Tools, or a similar CRM;
  • Proficiency with social media scheduling and reporting tools, such as Sprout Social;
  • Familiarity in design software such as PhotoShop, InDesign and/or Adobe Illustrator;
  • Understanding of fragile settings where Relief International works would be an advantage;
  • Foreign language fluency in one of RI’s country languages (Arabic, Farsi, etc.) would be an advantage.
