Job Description


Abt Associates seeks a qualified Director, International Accounting, to lead the Accounting and Finance team in our Rockville, MD, office. This position plays a critical role in the financial reporting, tax, payroll, internal control and accounting cycles and is responsible for overseeing the preparation and review of GAAP, IFRS and statutorily compliant financial statements, foreign jurisdiction tax provisions and returns, foreign jurisdiction payroll.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the timely and accurate completion of all foreign statutory audits for 40+ foreign jurisdictions
    • Implement best practices in the application of GAAP, IFRS or statutory regulations and the best use of available technology
    • Ensure all financial reports are issued timely in accordance with prescribed reporting deadlines
  • Oversee the preparation and review of complex account reconciliations and analyses
    • Ensure analyses are appropriately and professionally presented
    • Ensure reconciling items are identified, researched and resolved in a timely manner
    • Ensure all requirements related to GAAP, Government Accounting, Tax and Company Policy are appropriately considered and addressed
  • Oversee the setup, maintenance and use of the Company’s ERP system to effect the most streamlined and automated financial close cycle
  • Design, implement and monitor compliance of key financial and accounting controls
    • Monitor the compliance of domestic and international subsidiaries with these controls
  • Oversee the timely, accurate and compliant processing of foreign jurisdiction payroll
  • Develop, implement and advise the Company and subsidiaries regarding tax strategy and compliance for foreign operations
  • Oversee the management of AP operations ensuring the application of best practices and the appropriate use of the best available technology
  • Recruit the highest quality staff and mentor them to achieve their best while promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
    • Ensure all staff provide superior customer service
    • Ensure all staff are held accountable for developing both technical (GAAP, IFRS, Tax, Payroll, etc.) and technological expertise related to their roles
  • Identify and communicate metrics that measure the performance of functions in accordance with best practices and customer expectations

Preferred Skills / Prerequisites

  • BA degree with a concentration in Accounting
  • CPA required
  • 5+ years of increasing management responsibility and experience with a Big Four Accounting firm with significant exposure to international accounting and tax
  • Superior computer skills. Expertise in Excel
  • Expertise in process design and improvement for optimal results
  • Strong leadership skills. Ability to collaborate with all levels of management.
  • Experience mobilizing team members and colleagues to focus on key issues, tasks and priorities
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills
  • In-depth knowledge and expertise on IFRS, GAAP and Tax matters
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to maintain strategic agility by anticipating future consequences and trends accurately and showing broad knowledge and perspective
  • Effective at coping with and managing a team through change with the ability to shift gears comfortably
  • Ability to comfortably delegate both routine and important tasks and decisions; broadly sharing both responsibility and accountability
  • Effective at presenting in a variety of formal presentation settings: one-on-one, small and large groups, with peers, direct reports, and bosses

Minimum Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience and BA degree (MS preferred) or the equivalent combination of education and experience
