After 25 years of serving close to half a million women survivors of war through our life-changing integrated program, Women for Women International (WfWI) is in a unique position to help. Gender equality and conflict are at the forefront of public minds. Donors understand and support our evidence-based pro-poor graduation style program. We have a powerful one-to-one individual giving model that connects tens of thousands of supporters directly to the women we serve and to the women’s movement, which provides funding for 70% of our work. Partnerships with the US, UK, Irish and Dutch governments and with foundations including Bloomberg Philanthropies, Cartier Philanthropy, BlackRock, and NoVo have allowed us to expand.

We are now recruiting a Director, Global Business Development with international experience to join our committed board and staff in developing a new 2020-2025 strategy that will double our size and impact. We seek candidates who are highly motivated by our mission, bring existing networks and contacts, and are established thought leaders in their area of expertise. We are a global organization with fundraising offices in the US, UK, and Germany, direct programs in Afghanistan, Rwanda, Nigeria, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Iraq, and partnerships with organizations serving Syrian, South Sudanese, and Rohingya women, so ability to travel and collaborate with colleagues at a distance is required. French and Arabic skills are a plus, as is prior exposure to pro-poor graduation model. Candidates must be comfortable with growth, change, and ambiguity and able to think strategically while also pitching in at an operational level to get the job done.


The Director of Global Business Development is responsible for increasing Women for Women International’s (WfWI) global revenue from large institutional donors focusing on NGO partnerships, large foundation and corporate donors as well as some multi-lateral and bilateral funding. The Director is responsible for preparing and delivering a Global Business Development Strategy that incorporates and guides the business development work of the HQ, the UK Office, and the Country Offices.

The position reports to the Vice-President for Global Programs and will sit in the Global Program team. The Director should foster a truly Global Business Development team combining a small, effective Business Development Unit at HQ, with key staff from the Program Funding and Philanthropy Team in WfWI-UK, the Global Program team, the Development team, and the Country Offices to promote a coordinated, coherent approach that will accelerate our fundraising. The WfWI-UK functions as an independent entity sharing the same mission but with different organizational structures. The UK’s Program Funding and Philanthropy team is responsible for all European opportunities. The Director for Global Business Development will be required to navigate coordination and achieve success through building buy-in and taking advantage of our global strengths.

The Director is responsible for ensuring a streamlined, flexible and responsive process for all proposal response and development, within the overall strategy of WfWI.

To achieve the ambitious goal of doubling our global revenue from large institutional donors in the next five years, s/he will undertake extensive outreach to potential donors and partners; create mechanisms to maintain and cultivate an active pipeline; identify and apply for posted opportunities; identify and pursue pathways to partnerships for new funding; and build relationships with new donors.

WfWI aims to increase the capacity of our Country Offices to undertaken business development in country. This role should support proposal development by the country offices; and coordinate with appropriate WfWI teams to strengthen the capacity of country offices in donor networking, program design, budgeting, and grant writing, and new business development.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead Development and Implementation of Global Business Development Strategy

  • Develop, update and implement a multi-year strategy and an annual business development workplan that will enable WfWI to meet ambitious revenue targets.
  • Report progress to and discuss challenges with the appropriate Board committees and the Global Board of Directors.
  • Work closely with key fundraisers, program staff and other teams across WfWI to implement effective strategies and approaches to grow funding and scale our programs.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities of relevant WfWI actors.
  • Support Country Office and program staff to understand and implement best practice in fundraising and partnerships with governments, institutions, foundations and corporations.

Identify Funding Sources and Cultivate Donors

  • Manage business intelligence collection efforts by staying abreast of overall funding developments and understanding overall funder priorities and calls for proposals.
  • Coordinate & manage the research and strategy for pursuing viable funding opportunities from foundation, corporations and government donors.
  • Build and maintain an active pipeline of prospects, in keeping with revenue targets.
  • Evaluate funding opportunities in detail, providing clear guidance on the criteria, deadline, and priorities to ensure effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Develop leads on promising funding opportunities by initiating outreach and strengthening relationships with current and potential donors, as required.
  • Identify and build partnerships with other NGOs for joint proposals.
  • Regularly communicate with field staff to gather business intelligence and keep them abreast of new areas of business development.
  • Prepare strategic approach for key priority funders including mapping our approach to funding.

Prepare Proposals

  • Depending on the size and complexity of the proposal, serve as lead coordinator, proposal reviewer, and/or lead technical writer on submissions.
  • When coordinating a submission, manage technical writer, researchers or consultants where applicable, and anyone else directly involved in the application.
  • Train other staff members to coordinate all aspects of proposal development and to write high-quality proposals.
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with technical specialists, subject-matter experts, and professional writers to contribute to technical solution designs, reviews, and analysis of proposals and business development strategy.
  • Contribute to technical solution design processes.
  • Ensure that relevant internal stakeholders contribute to proposal design and that, when appropriate, relevant staff approve the final proposal.
  • Liaise with colleagues in the development of a coherent budget, ensuring adherence to grantor criteria in relation to accepted costs, percentages, and format.

Support Country Office Business Development

  • Coach and mentor Country Office teams to pursue local opportunities.
  • Support Country Offices with updating of their business development plans
  • Identify resources needed to strengthen fundraising capacity in countries.
  • Develop a plan for strengthening business development in each Country Office.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Prepare and communicate analysis and trends to the Global Board of Directors.
  • Communicate with colleagues in Global Programs Unit, Finance, Development, and the UK office. Must be able to operate in an environment with over-lapping roles.
  • Develop an effective process for sharing proposals, templates, and cases for support so that all WfWI fundraisers can access material helpful to support their fundraising efforts.

This position will require regular national and international travel, estimated at 25% but subject to change.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree preferred, in a relevant subject, or the equivalent in experience.
  • At least ten years of experience in fundraising with hands on experience across at least two funding channels (i.e., foundations; corporate partnerships; or government (bilateral or multi-lateral) for an international NGO.
  • Proven track record of success in fundraising with evidence of personal engagement and leadership of successful, large, and complex proposals and pitches.
  • Proven successful grant writing experience.
  • Experience managing staff and working cross-departmental with a proven record of building, managing and working with virtual teams and creating an enabling environment.
  • Current and strategic understanding of the global humanitarian and development funding environment and future trends.
  • Experience in and knowledge of international development, preferably gender issues.
  • Excellent spoken and written English to include research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience building the capacity of staff in country offices.
  • Independent, but good at working with a team and ability to coordinate with others to produce material on deadline, usually managing multiple deadlines.
  • Proven ability to build consensus and support across, up and down the organization.
  • Excellent budget management skills including the ability to oversee complex program budgets in compliance with donor requirements.
  • Certification or formal credentialing in nonprofit fundraising management or philanthropic leadership a plus.
  • Proficiency in French, Arabic, or Dari is a plus.
  • International work experience delivering restricted/unrestricted funded projects a plus.
