Job Description


The Director, Sustainable Food & Agricultural Systems, provides technical, managerial, and business development leadership and oversight to strengthen and expand IRD’s operations and programs in the food security and agricultural development sector. Additionally, s/he represents IRD to donors, partners and government agencies, and serves as a member of the IRD Senior Management Team (SMT)

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leads, oversees, and provides strategic vision on sector policies and programs including annual and monthly program and budget reviews, work plan implementation, and IRD and donor project reporting
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to IRD in the areas of agricultural development and food security
  • Participates in regular department management meetings and represents the unit at senior management and operations meetings
  • Supervises and mentors SFAS staff and identifies new or changing staffing requirements and leads the recruitment process for new staff
  • Develops relationships with other US-based and international organizations and assists in the development of partnerships and collaborative efforts
  • Provides technical quality control and contributes to the technical design of proposals that ensures the strength of IRD business development while assuring compliance with IRD policies and procedures
  • Works with field teams to ensure that the programs are implemented in compliance with IRD policies and donor/client rules, regulations and other requirements and provide management oversight and technical assistance to IRD’s field teams
  • Leads/participates in business development and project design efforts, including; leading proposal planning and writing teams, conducting filed based assessments and drafting concept papers, identifying and negotiating with potential partners on new business initiatives, and conducting technical and other assessments
  • Represents IRD in selected US and international meeting and conferences; and
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Food Security / Nutrition or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the international agricultural development, including field experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of USAID policies, programs, priorities, rules and regulations
  • Fluency in English with strong oral, written, analytical and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and use of the internet as a research tool

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Knowledge of USDA programs, policies, priorities, rules and regulations
  • Fluency in foreign language (Spanish or French preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of USG and international agricultural markets

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 30%
