Abt Associates, a major American business and government research, technical assistance, and consulting company, manages the USAID-funded Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) Project, which seeks to reduce the burden of malaria in numerous African countries through cost-effective commodities procurement and logistics systems, access to technical expertise, and implementation of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS).
Abt Associates currently seeks a qualified French speaking candidate for a 5-month consultant assignment in Burundi as an Entomologist/Technical Insectary Manager, beginning in the second half of March 2013.
Under the supervision of the AIRS Technical Coordinator for Burundi, based in Bethesda, MD (USA), the Consultant will provide leadership and management oversight to the National Malaria Control Program’s (NMCP) first insectary in Burundi. Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Establish the NMCP’s insectary in Gihanga; work with the NMCP and AIRS on setting up all the procured entomology supplies; establish a mosquito colony from a Kisumu strain and local field- collected mosquitoes.
- Train two Insectary Managers and two Entomology Technicans from the NMCP on establishing an insectary and on rearing mosquitos, ensuring the transfer of technical skills to local institutions.
- In collboration with NMCP, help to identify the sentinel sites for the enhanced entomology monitoring in different proviences.
- Lead the field collection of entomological data on vector bionomics and insecticide resistance at the identified sentinel sites.
- Ensure that the sub-set of mosquito samples collected be preserved for further analysis.
- Work with the NMCP on strategic planning for entomology and vector control.
- Write and submit monthly progress reports on the insectary to the Technical Coordinator, and prepare a final report at the end of the assignment which includes recommendations for the NMCP insectary, sentinel sites, and vector control in Burundi.
Qualification requirements include the following:
- Master’s degree (minimum), Doctorate degree (desirable), in Entomology.
- At least 7 years of relevant professional work experience with significant amounts of experience directly realted to establishing an insectary and mosquito colony.
- Experience in training entomoloigst technicans on entomological monitoring and field activities.
- Strong management and planning skills of an insectary and sentinel sites.
- Demonstrates leadership and team work and produces high quality work in a timely, cost effective manner and has excellent writing skills.
- Experience with USAID and donor projects is highly desirable.
- Fluency in French required and proficiency in English.
