Job Description

The AWDF is searching for an Assistant with a thorough knowledge of accounting procedures, a commitment to excellence, and a sound, data-driven sense of judgement for the position of Finance Assistant – Due Diligence. The prospective candidate must have the relevant skills, knowledge and experience to support the work of this innovative women’s rights organisation. The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a pioneering grantmaking foundation headquartered in Ghana. AWDF was founded by and for African women. Since 2001 we have awarded over USD$34 million in grants to support leading women’s rights organisations and feminist movements across Africa.


As a grant making Foundation, AWDF has a responsibility to ensure that all financial resources received by the organisation are used for the intended purposes and are managed efficiently and effectively. Additionally, AWDF has responsibility to ensure that there is accountability and transparency around the use of funds at all times that are in tune with international best practice.

In view of this, AWDF is seeking to expand its internal capacity for risk management by recruiting a Finance Assistant – Due Diligence (FADD) as part of the Finance Team to work across the organisation. This person will assist the Finance Officer to add value and optimize our operations through their systematic and disciplined approach to maximizing the effectiveness of our risk management and internal control processes.

The FADD will work closely with the Finance Officer and with the grant management team. The FADD will provide support and oversight through individual grants and across the entire grant portfolio ensuring that fiduciary risk and due diligence are proactively delivered and that the financial management of grantees are supported to be consistent with acceptable international standards.


  1. Working to support strong financial management systems within AWDF, including working with the Finance Officer and Finance team to strengthen, design or develop AWDF’s due diligence frameworks and implementation.
  2. Assist the finance officer to complete the fiduciary risk requirements of new grant applications, including due diligence assessment, and liaison with contractors/consultants engaged to carry out due diligence assignments.
  3. Carry out regular financial management checks or verification of grantees including verification of grant expenses, assessment of financial reports and regular review of the financial management systems of grantees.
  4. Review each grantee financial report to ensure that expenditures are reported against budget and, that any significant variances are noted and explained and that significant under- or over-performance against agreed budgets is elevated with the Finance Officer.
  5. Assist in supporting grantee external audit processes as and when needed.
  6. Assist in providing Financial Management guidance to the grantees directly as well as supporting them to strengthen grant management capacity and financial management arrangements.
  7. Assist in monitoring the in-house grant management and other programmatic systems to identify fiduciary and other risks, such as defaults and delays, and negotiate and implement important mitigating measures and safeguards as and when needed.
  8. Carry out international field visits as and when necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  9. Ensure all communication and recording of due diligence information is completed and stored accurately.
  10. Carry out any other tasks related to due diligence across AWDF’s programmatic and Organisational work, as assigned



  • Academic Requirements: First Degree (or its equivalent) in accounting, finance, or related discipline plus intermediary professional accountancy qualification.
  • Experience in a financial/fiduciary role with proven experience in risk management, due diligence, audit or financial management
  • Essential IT skills inclusive of MS Office, excel spreadsheets and other financial accounting software
  • Handle sensitive information in an appropriate manner, including maintaining high levels of confidentiality.
  • Excellent team spirit, presentation and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong sense of integrity and continuous demonstration of honesty, transparency and accountability
  • Strong command of written and spoken English including ability to document processes and prepare review findings.
  • Must be self-confident and willing to learn
  • Experience of using own initiative, with a proactive and problem solving attitude.
  • Prioritize work to meet goals and objectives within the acceptable time frames.
  • Handle stressful situations with ease and composure


Experience working within a CSO/NGO grant awarding system

Experience of public financial management

Working knowledge in written and spoken French language will be an advantage
