Job Description

Cooper/Smith is currently seeking a Finance Director to lead our financial management processes and strategy. The Finance Director will work closely with Cooper/Smith’s executive management team to develop and execute our financial strategy with specific attention towards planning, management tools, processes, and organizational growth initiatives. They will also be responsible for working with the business development and project management teams, as needed, to develop guidance and solutions for project budgeting and financial oversight.

Duration: This is a long-term, full-time position.

Location: Flexible; Washington, D.C., preferable

Responsibilities

Work closely with the CEO and COO to develop and continuously update Cooper/Smith’s organizational budget for financial growth and planning;

Manage Cooper/Smith’s organizational cash flow, financial planning tools, and organizational budgeting initiatives;

Prepare financial briefs for Cooper/Smith’s Management Team in advance of monthly Management meetings, quarterly project report out’s, and organizational planning discussions;

Work with the COO to update and improve Cooper/Smith’s pricing methodology, optimizing our organizational business model to align with donor guidelines and budgeting requirements;

Provide insights and contribute to donor engagements as Cooper/Smith’s finance, budget, and pricing specialist;

Work with the COO to explore new models for diversifying revenue streams and optimizing Cooper/Smith’s profitability;

Serve as the financial liaison with Cooper/Smith’s grantees and subcontractors, providing guidance on budget development; financial planning; budgeted vs. actual spend; and reporting and invoicing;

Identify and support any required contract or grant modifications (ex. revised deliverables, timelines, cost and no cost extensions), to ensure alignment with organizational cash flow and financial growth;

Coordinate with the Operations Team in reviewing and approving invoices, monthly financial reports, wire requests, travel authorizations, and expense reports;

Provide guidance to Cooper/Smith’s staff in preparing and submitting travel and expense reports.

Required Skills

Professional fluency in English;

5+ years of experience, serving in a managerial role specific to financial management, accounting, and financial oversight;

Experience working with bi-lateral and donor organizations, specifically experience with the Gates Foundation & grant-based financial management;

Experience supporting or leading an external audit;

In-country or home office experience working with and supporting programs in Low- and Middle-Income Countries;

Experience with long-term strategic financial planning for growing organizations in the development sector;

Experience managing a team of accountants or administrative support staff, providing oversight, direction, and guidance, on company cash flow, projections, and financial planning;

Experience liaising with donor and partner financial management teams, in addition to local grantees, subcontractors, and stakeholders to address cost and pricing considerations;

Experience working with multidisciplinary teams in international settings and familiarity with commonly encountered organizations in international development (donors, multilaterals, consulting firms, etc.);

Solution oriented, strategic thinker with ability to identify and address challenges;

Experience developing and refining internal financial management tools to improve the accuracy and management of company and project finances;

Proven track record demonstrating sound judgment and exceptional attention to detail;

Excellent writing skills, with ability to distil complex financial scenarios for management review and approval;

Analytical thinker, comfortable working with quantitative and qualitative analysis;

Master’s Degree in relevant field - a plus
