I. Background on ACTED
ACTED (Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development) is an apolitical and non-confessional international relief agency created in Afghanistan. The first projects were initiated in Kabul in 1993 to bring relief to populations affected by more than 15 years of conflict. As of today, ACTED is active on 4 continents and in 17 countries. The organization employs approximately 100 international staff and more than 2000 national staff. The headquarters for the organization are located in Paris (France). ACTED develops about 150 projects a year in such diversified activities as Emergency Relief, Food Security, Health Promotion Network, Economic Development, Education and training, Microfinance, Advocacy – Institutional Support and Regional Dialogue, and Cultural promotion.
II. Background on Programme:
The Hygiene Promotion Coordinator will work on a project that aims at improving water access, basic sanitation facilities and hygiene knowledge and practices in several schools in Wau and Raja towns in order to create a safe and appealing learning environment for children, thereby reducing dropouts. The hygiene component includes, more specifically, the implementation of a survey of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the school children and teachers, training of teachers to set up health clubs in their schools and monitoring and supervision of health clubs. The project will also include an evaluation designed to assess the impact of the project and the student?s health and hygiene profile after completion of the activities. In addition, the Hygiene Promotion Coordinator will be in charge of developing mass media (TV and radio) health and hygiene campaign and work with water committees on the promotion of good hygiene practices.
III. Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Hygiene Promotion Coordinator will have the following responsibilities: To design in cooperation with programme management and M&E unit a baseline and post-completion survey and facilitate its implementation and the assessment of the outcome; To design hygiene education and hygiene promotion material in close collaboration with UNICEF; To design a curriculum for the training of teachers in hygiene promotion among their students; To support teachers in setting-up and monitoring of health clubs in schools; To design a curriculum for the training of community hygiene promoters; To organise training sessions for community hygiene promoters; To support community hygiene promoters in setting up a hygiene promotion timetable and to monitor activities; To develop a mass media hygiene and health promotion campaign To manage 4 national hygiene promotion assistants; To organise the procurement of all hygiene material; To ensure accurate and timely reporting of activities; To coordinate with government departments, UN agencies and NGOs on a state level on health and hygiene; To ensure cross-programme integration, learning, sharing and adoption of best practices from other ACTED programs To ensure effective integration and mainstreaming of gender into all activities.
IV. Qualifications required
A) Essential A university degree incorporating a component of public health or a nursing/public health training; Sound knowledge of good hygiene practices and of waterborne diseases prevention; Highly motivated and with a desire to work with local communities; Able to coordinate and manage staff and project activities; Familiarity with the aid system, and ability to understand donor and governmental requirements; Proven ability to work creatively and independently both in the field and in the office; Being a strong team player and adept at creating a strong team spirit; Ability to organize and plan effectively; Ability to work with culturally diverse groups of people; Ability to travel and work in difficult conditions and under pressure; Excellent spoken and written English.
B) Desirable Previous overseas work experience with an aid organization; Knowledge of South Sudan would be an asset
IV. Conditions
Intern status (600 USD/month) Benefits: All accommodation and travel expenses covered, including a one-week R&R every three months. Medical and life insurance also covered.
