About the job

The demand for our services to advise on marine and coastal development is growing both in the UK and internationally, particularly in Asia and Scandinavia, where our work is undertaken in close collaboration with our local offices. Based in our Marine Environment team, you will become a core member of the ornithology specialist team, who conduct ornithological assessment and research for leading offshore wind clients and globally-significant projects. Although this role is focused on offshore wind, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of interesting and challenging projects with some of NIRAS’ most high-profile clients, including blue-chip companies, in marine and international development sectors, including environmental and biodiversity action planning, biodiversity banking and marine spatial planning, climate change adaptation and low carbon economic development. You will support delivery of our existing assignments while also contributing to expanding our portfolio of work, and will be expected to support our professional team across a wide area of the business, in order to gain a broad commercial and professional experience. Your day-to-day work will include developing the supporting ornithological information for planning, consenting and licensing of marine projects, including applications for renewable energy developments. You will contribute to Ornithology and Ecology EIA chapters and prepare Environmental Statements, studies to inform Appropriate Assessment, marine licence applications and provide advice to nationally significant infrastructure developments. This work will be underpinned by research into offshore renewable impacts upon birds and engagement with relevant stakeholders (e.g. MMO, Planning Inspectorate, JNCC, Natural England, RSPB).

Key accountabilities:

  • Desk research, e.g. to understand which Special Protected Areas are relevant to a project and what datasets currently exist to inform an assessment, or collating recently published wind farm environmental impact assessments to calculate their cumulative impact
  • Analyses, e.g. calculating impacts upon birds from offshore wind farms using collision risk modelling and displacement analysis
  • Utilising GIS to process data, present data and to inform assessments such as HRA Screening
  • Establishing the basis of ornithological assessments such as seabird foraging ranges, collision risk and population viability analysis
  • Preparation of written outputs or presentations, such as contribution to ornithology EIA chapters and technical reports for offshore wind projects
  • Field data collection, e.g. monitoring kittiwake breeding population size and nesting success, which may include offshore boat-based as well as onshore surveys
  • Researching and summarising relevant published and unpublished ornithological, environmental, and ecological data
  • Monitoring relevant literature to keep abreast of advances in understanding of relevant consenting matters
  • Interpreting findings of surveys, analyses and research to inform impact assessment and define bird monitoring projects for offshore wind farms
  • Supporting Expressions of Interest and proposals for work, including gathering relevant administrative documents and materials and presenting track record and personnel according to client requirements
  • Attend client and stakeholder meetings
