In this role as the Policy and Advocacy Advisor (maternity cover) you will support the Head of Office to strengthen collaboration and build partnerships with the UN to improve the rights of children everywhere, with a particular focus on the rights of girls. You will work to increase Plan International’s global influence and contribute to Plan International’s advocacy work at the United Nations in New York by identifying and highlighting the challenges and solutions to the realization of child and girls’ rights at a global level. You will also work with other Plan International offices to facilitate and support involvement with relevant United Nations agencies and mechanisms at the country, regional and national levels, and work to ensure duty bearers are reminded of their responsibilities and obligations to act when it comes to child rights and child protection with an emphasis on gender equality.
You will require a strong understanding of how to develop and apply strategic advocacy activities, including the ability to provide nuanced and tailored messaging. This role will require initiative and leadership in identifying and engaging in strategic opportunities and advocacy entry-points as they arise and must be able to analyse and make recommendations and judgement calls on which advocacy opportunities and tactics are most strategic and impactful for Plan’s stated objectives. This will involve careful stocktaking, and monitoring and evaluation of lessons learned from previous advocacy endeavours, as well as the ability to think strategically in the short, medium, and long-term.

About the Organization
Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
We believe in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.
Working together with children, young people, our supporters and partners, we strive for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.
We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood. And we enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.
We have been building powerful partnerships for children for over 80 years, and are now active in more than 70 countries.
