Job Description

Internship – Environment, Climate Change, Business and Human Rights (OHCHR-WARO)

  • Work Location: Dakar, Senegal
  • Expected Duration: 6 months
  • Desired Start Date: 1 September

Duties and Responsibilities
As the leading UN entity on human rights, OHCHR has an independent mandate to promote and protect human rights globally and to mainstream them across the UN system. The OHCHR-WARO (West Africa Regional Office) program for 2024–2027 prioritizes integrating human rights into Sustainable Development, particularly focusing on environmental issues, climate change, and business-related human rights impacts.

The internship will take place within OHCHR-WARO, based in Dakar. The intern will report to the Deputy Regional Representative, under general supervision of the Regional Representative, and assist with the Office’s work on Environment, Climate Change, Business and Human Rights, and Sustainable Environmental Management.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on environment, climate change, business and human rights.
  • Monitor developments in West Africa related to environmental crises, climate impacts, and associated human rights issues.
  • Draft concept notes, stakeholder maps, reports, briefings, and talking points.
  • Support the organization of events and activities on related thematic issues.
  • Assist in advancing the right to a healthy environment in regional programming.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings, consultations, and briefings.
  • Support OHCHR WARO efforts to implement sustainable environmental management practices.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (Master’s or equivalent) or be in the final year of a Bachelor’s program in Law, International Relations, Political Science, Development, or a related field.
  • No professional experience is required, but the field of study should be relevant to the internship.
  • Knowledge of human rights and/or environmental issues is desirable.
  • Familiarity with standard software such as MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams is expected.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written French is required.
  • Good knowledge of English is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • All costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsor.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Senegal may need to secure appropriate visa and work authorization before starting.
