Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of staff members of the Section, interns will:

  • Under the supervision of staff members of the Section, interns may be tasked with:
  • Conducting legal research, on administrative law and staff-related issues, including on ILOAT case law and jurisprudence;
  • Conducting legal research, inter alia, on international criminal law and procedure, human rights law, international humanitarian law, (other branches of) public international law, compliance and ethics, and national criminal law and procedure;
  • Assisting with the development and drafting of internal regulatory instruments, which include, amongst others, the OTP Regulations and Operations Manual;
  • Assisting with the Lessons Learned system to identify and implement good practices. This may involve e.g. the maintenance and development of on-line legal tools, commentaries and databases for the Office, and the development and amendment to training materials;
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of a legal-academic network for the Office, including the preparation and organisation for, and the implementation of, a series of Guest Lectures by external experts;
  • Assisting with the development, amendment and implementation of OTP policies on key issues identified by the Prosecutor;
  • Assisting with the establishment and maintenance of the professional and ethical standards of the Office, including the Office’s Code of Conduct; and
  • Providing other contributions to any of the other tasks of the Section.

Required Qualifications

Education:

All Candidates must, at the start date of their internship, have a law degree from a recognised university; an advanced degree will be a strong asset. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers; therefore, practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Section may be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidates must:

  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multilingual working environment.
  • Strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Excellent digital skills, including computer literacy and the use of social media.
  • Excellent drafting skills in English.
  • Photography and basic photo editing skills.
  • Good analytical and organisational capabilities.
  • Discretion, reliability, intellectual rigour, honesty, creativity, and perseverance.

Knowledge of Languages:

  • Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English. Working knowledge of the other is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
