Background Information

A key objective for UNOPS is to be recognized as delivering world-class infrastructure that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, even in the most challenging environments. To achieve this goal, UNOPS has established a Sustainable Infrastructure practice, with articulated servicelines and resources embedded throughout UNOPS global presence.

The Knowledge Management Officer will report to the Head of Design and Planning, Sustainable Infrastructure Practice, with a secondary reporting line to the Head of Construction Management. The Knowledge Management Officer will work closely with UNOPS country offices to facilitate knowledge sharing and disseminate information on the projects, resources and best practice of the sustainable infrastructure practice.

Below are some of the responsibilities.

The Knowledge Management Officer will be a primary source of information in the practice and will ensure that infrastructure practitioners are provided with accurate and timely information on matters relating to sustainable infrastructure to support both business development and operations. The Knowledge Management Officer will actively research, collate and coordinate information from UNOPS practitioners across the globe and synthesise the information into best practice guidance materials and practice toolkits. These may include standard and example designs, lessons learned and collected expertise from UNOPS experience around the globe. The Knowledge Management Officer will also actively research new technical areas and provide information and analysis on innovative solutions for infrastructure in a development context.


The Knowledge Management Officer will be responsible for coordination of internal and external communications relating to the sustainable infrastructure practice. This may include the coordination of articles, identifying suitable conferences, attending working groups and providing the necessary data to the Communications department for input to the external websites and corporate presentations The Knowledge Management Officer will be responsible for maintaining the sustainable infrastructure section of the UNOPS intranet and coordination of the Community of Practice on sustainable infrastructure.

Development of corporate tools

The Knowledge Management Officer will be responsible for identifying the need for and developing a series of tools to support the main service lines and outputs of the practice. For example, he/she will be responsible for managing the development and roll-out of a Contract Management software solution for the management of works contracts and for developing a strategy for Monitoring and Evaluation in the infrastructure practice.

Information management

The Knowledge Management Officer will be responsible for collating and providing baseline data on UNOPS infrastructure projects and resources within the field of infrastructure, working with UNOPS country offices to obtain all relevant information. He/she will be responsible for developing a methodology for data management and document control at multiple levels (global, country, local), and for the management of design standards, design guides, text books, and other reference materials. He/she will also be responsible for any global licenses held by the infrastructure practice, e.g. FIDIC licence, ISO documents etc.

Strategic partnerships

The Knowledge Management Officer will actively participate in the identification and development of new strategic partnerships between UNOPS and relevant professional and academic bodies, with the purpose of enhancing the value add of UNOPS infrastructure knowledge both within and outside the organisation.

Education/Experience/Language Requirement:

Advanced degree in relevant field (e.g. Project Management, Civil Engineering or related field) is required. Additional years of relevant work experience in combination with a first level degree may substitute for the requirement for an advanced degree.

At least 7 years work experience in project management, knowledge management and/or construction industry is required.

Experience within an international organisation is advantageous

Experience in infrastructure within the development sector or private sector is a distinct asset.

Experience of working in developing countries and working in an international environment is desirable.

Internationally recognized professional certification in engineering, architecture or construction management (e.g. CEng, PE, or equivalent) is desirable

Project management certification (e.g. PRINCE 2) is desirable

Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish desirable
