Job Description

The USAID Agriculture and Food Systems Development Activity (AFDA) in Myanmar facilitates the transformation of agriculture and food systems by increasing productivity, inclusiveness, and competitiveness of the agricultural market system in the zone of influence (ZOI) such as Kachin State, Shan State, Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region and Magway Region. The Market Specialist will 1) identify opportunities in the China markets where Myanmar, and AFDA ZOI producers and related firms can competitively expand, upgrade and diversify; and 2) provide information on competition and requirements such as product specifications, terms (buyers’ requirement) and other relevant steps needed by suppliers to enter and/or expand in these markets and significantly increase exports of Myanmar agricultural products to China. The anticipated timeframe for this assignment is between late July 2020 to December 2020 with up to 60 days of effort.


The consultant will provide the following deliverables:

  • Market research and trade facilitation plan (inception report)
  • Written report and power point presentation on priority market opportunities with all supporting documentation and references as specified
  • Written report or power point presentation on market intelligence as specified in the specific tasks (updated as appropriate to share new information)
  • Deliver power point presentation (in-person or online) to stakeholders in Myanmar through a forum to be organized by AFDA
  • Written report on buyer database
  • At least one contract signed, two more under negotiation and actual sales generated
  • Final report including key findings, observations, and recommendation on next steps to achieve significant expansion of diversified exports to China


· Master’s degree in Marketing, Business or related area

· At least eight years’ experience doing market research, marketing and sales, with at least four years involving agricultural products and three years in China

· Demonstrated successful experience in market analysis and marketing of crop-based agricultural products in China

· Demonstrated success in increasing agricultural export sales and market expansion in China for regional companies (South East Asian and South Asian)

· Experience with trade facilitation with China and familiarity with Chinese customs requirements and issues

· Knowledge of Myanmar’s agricultural products, its exports and competitors, an advantage

· Knowledge of trade dynamics between China and Myanmar an advantage

· Excellent spoken and written English

· Consultant is currently based in China
