Our Impact Advisory practice is in a growth phase and has an exciting opportunity to fill a Practice Lead position. The role will lead the development and growth of an Impact Advisory practice within Cardno’s International Development (ID) Division leveraging off Cardno ID’s deep experience in donor funded development projects across the world, its extensive emerging market presence and knowledge, and building on nascent private sector consulting engagements to date.

About the role

This role will lead and shape the development and implementation of a practice, which will include focusing on stabilizing the early achievements of the Practice and building a scalable consulting business from that base. It will further develop and build the Practice team to meet current and emerging requirements, engage with internal stakeholders to build support for the Practice and leverage internal capabilities in support of Practice growth.

With your management consulting experience and repertoire in starting a consultancy from incubation, growing and leading a practice, you will lead the strategic planning and initiatives, manage and mentor the practice team by providing guidance and direction in the development and direction of strategies, in particular, engagement with the private sector.

This role will have oversight and guide business development efforts by positioning for and securing high value consulting projects with an explicit focus on sustainability investment activities in priority markets, for example, modern day slavery.

Further responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Develop and build the Practice team to meet current and emerging requirements. Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including new and existing clients, business partners, and independent development consultants/firms;
  • Represent the Practice externally, with clients and through eminence building;
  • Continue to develop the strategy for the Practice building on work done to date and immediate priorities, building to a broader strategic focus in areas such as ESG and emerging market advisory;
  • Collaborate with other teams within broader Cardno;
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and management support to staff;
  • Manage/contribute to proposal teams to ensure that members are coordinating workloads and producing high quality proposals;
  • Leverage Cardno ID AP’s existing project and financial management capabilities and tailor them to the needs of the Practice;
  • Monitor and report on market research / trends to contribute to corporate business strategy;
  • Put in place and manage a matrix of full-time/ part-time and contracted expertise to meet the needs of the expanding Practice; and,
  • All other duties as outlined in the position description.

You will have the following relevant experience:

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree in business management, international development or a related discipline. A post-graduate degree in relevant field (favourable);
  • Minimum 15 years relevant professional experience in a top-tier global strategy consulting firm and development;
  • Ability to build, drive and maintain strong working and results-focused relationships with a range of stakeholders in both the private and public sectors;
  • Understanding of how to develop consulting solutions, which balance private sector commercial imperatives with sound, sustainable development outcomes;
  • Ability to present written or oral concepts concisely and quickly;
  • Proven organisational skills and attention to detail, with ability to prioritise own workload;
  • Demonstrated analytical and conceptual skills to reason through problems and complex issues, anticipate barriers, and create practical solutions;
  • Demonstrated success in the growth and management of a consulting practice, and client relationships;
  • Demonstrated experience in managing, mentoring and growing an existing professional team; and,
  • Proven ability to build trusting relationships with new and existing clients and internal/external stakeholders.

You will have proven experience across the entire business development life cycle including demonstrated success in managing and winning proposals and implementing engagement strategies. This includes experience and demonstrated understanding of private sector clients, including the latest thinking and delivery models for engagement with the private sector and delivery of shared valued projects.
