About the Organization
The American University of Afghanistan (AUAF), a private non-profit English-language coeducational university, seeks applications and nominations for President. Founded in 2006, AUAF offers a US-model liberal arts and professional education. AUAF has grown from an initial enrollment of 50 to nearly 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. An additional 1,500 students are enrolled in continuing education courses. The current student body is over 40% female. More than 90 AUAF graduates have received Fulbright Scholarships, and AUAF graduates occupy important positions in government, the private sector, NGOs, and international organizations. AUAF faculty come from 15 countries and hold masters and doctoral degrees granted by US and international universities. AUAF maintains partnerships with leading academic institutions, including the Stanford University, Babson College, and the University of Maryland.
The University offers bachelor degrees in Business, Information Technology, Political Science, Public Administration, and Law. AUAF’s undergraduate programs include a strong liberal-arts core requirement tailored to the higher education needs of Afghanistan. The University’s MBA program, the first in Afghanistan, has graduated 190 students since 2013. The AUAF Professional Development Institute offers a wide range of training and continuing education programs in English language, business and accounting, information technology and other fields to individuals, businesses, government agencies, and NGOs.
USAID provides significant support for the university’s $28 million annual budget, which is supplemented by scholarship grants from the US State Department, the Afghan Legal Education Program, tuition and fee income, philanthropic donations, and other contracts and grants. AUAF’s security structure and operations, which provide state of the art, embassy-level security, are funded by USAID.
Governed by an autonomous board of international academic, business and civic leaders, AUAF is accredited by the Afghanistan Ministry of Higher Education; is a candidate for accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP); and is an Associate Member of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities.
Located in the south of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, and adjacent to the new Parliament Building and the recently renovated Darulaman Palace, AUAF’s 55-acre campus is positioned at the heart of Kabul’s new government center. Students study in modern classrooms, computer and science laboratories, and two libraries with extensive and expanding research resources. The campus houses both male and female students in new dormitories and includes a housing compound with accommodation and amenities for international faculty and staff.
